The son of a Virginia bowling billionaire is in a contentious divorce after an alleged affair with his children's former nanny, according to court documents.

Papers filed in Albemarle County Circuit Court claim Peter Goodwin, 40, informed his wife, Cara Goodwin, also 40, that he wanted a divorce while she was holding their 4-month-old daughter on Christmas Day 2023.

Cara's filing states she "sat in front of him holding their 4-month-old daughter" as Peter told her the marriage was over. The documents allege he then left, screaming obscenities while their other three children were present.

Within six days, the papers claim, Peter traveled with former family nanny Annette Lombard, now 27, to the Four Seasons Hotel at the Surf Club in Surfside, Florida.

The filing alleges the pair engaged in acts of adultery in multiple locations, including Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the former couple's Palm Beach, Florida, property.

Annette began working for the Goodwins in 2019 at about age 21, while attending the University of Virginia. In spring 2020, she moved in with the family for about a year to help care for the children during the pandemic, according to the filings. She became close to the children, who referred to her as their sister.

That same year, Peter hired Annette at his company and later promoted her to vice president. The documents state that in late 2020, Cara expressed "growing discomfort regarding the nature of his interactions" with Annette, but Peter dismissed her concerns.

In August 2023, Cara gave birth to their fourth child. The next month, the papers state Peter sought greater independence and more time away from his family to concentrate on his own self-care.

Peter and Cara married in 2014. They have two daughters, ages 2 and 9, and two sons, ages 5 and 7. The filings note they have a prenuptial agreement.

Cara is seeking half of their marital assets, including business interests, child support, and $500,000 to cover legal fees and expert costs. The couple agreed to share custody of their children on February 27, 2024. Peter filed a motion last month to seal the divorce case, which Cara is opposing.

Online, the allegations have sparked strong reactions from social media followers. On X, one person wrote, "they basically look the same, just different age and hair colour. is it really cheating if he went for the younger version of his wife to relive the magic again [sic]?"

Another netizen commented, "Ahh this is why you need a very rotund 60+ y/o nanny." A third post read, "If I were to hire a nanny, she would be a grandmother type."

On Instagram, reactions were similar. One person stated, "This is why you hire an older nanny like a granny lol!!" Another asked, "Why do people hire young hot nannies. Get some old woman."

A further comment mentioned, "Seriously when are these housewives going to realize you can't have a Nanny in the house,!!! Especially if they are younger than you and your husband, here's a tip, watch and care for your own kids, like normal people have to do day in and day out, [sic]!!"

On Facebook, one netizen penned, "Reaping what she sowed [sic]." Another wondered, "Why do they hire gorgeous nanny [sic]." A third divulged, "Was listening to Cold Play [sic]."

Cara has long documented her family life and shared research-based parenting advice on Instagram. Besides being a mother of four, she is a child psychologist and has a following of 136k on Instagram.

In a November 2021 post, she marked Thanksgiving with a family photo and thanked followers for supporting Parenting Translator, which she described as a nonprofit focused on translating research for parents. She invited feedback on how she could help.

In April 2021, she highlighted a study about high-quality reading with 10-month-olds and shared ten practical tips drawn from the research. Her summary linked warm, enthusiastic parent–child play to stronger reading behaviors.

A month earlier, in March 2021, she noted her third baby turned nine months and outlined common nine-month milestones. She stressed that milestones are averages, shared that her own children developed at different paces, and advised parents to seek a developmental screening or free early intervention evaluation if concerned.

In February 2021, she celebrated a child's third birthday and listed skills many three-year-olds can do. She again encouraged parents to talk to a pediatrician or request a free evaluation through local public schools if worries arise.

A year before that, in August 2020, she posted for World Breastfeeding Week to normalize breastfeeding and to share research that could encourage struggling mothers. She also stated support for mothers who cannot or choose not to breastfeed.

Two months earlier, Cara introduced herself to new followers. She identified herself as a stay-at-home mother at the time to a 4-year-old girl, a 2-year-old boy, and another boy due in June 2020.

She explained her professional background in child development, listed degrees from UVA, Cambridge, Vanderbilt, and UNC, and noted her UNC internship and Duke postdoctoral fellowship.

She said she is licensed in Virginia and has multiple peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations. She outlined the account's goal: to share useful, accurate, and relevant research for parents and invite feedback.

Cara's public presence as both a parenting expert and devoted mother has made the allegations surrounding her marriage highly visible. Her Instagram feed offers a portrait of a parent deeply engaged in her children's lives, blending personal milestones with professional guidance for other families.

That image now stands in contrast to the turmoil described in court documents, as the divorce case moves forward and both sides prepare for a legal battle over assets, custody, and the future of one of Virginia's most prominent families.
